What is Wi-Fi?

What is Wi-Fi Frequencies and Channel Relationship?

ISM bands are used in Wi-fi systems. ISM bands are determined by ITU (International Telecomination Agency) and these frequencies are allocated worldwide. The frequencies determined by this institution for Wi-Fi communication are 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz.

The widely used Wi-Fi frequency in our country is 2.4 GHz. This broadcast frequency band applies to all modems on the market.

When we say 2.4 GHz frequency, we are actually talking about the top title. In other words, this frequency is allocated within a certain range and frequency channels are formed by dividing the frequency into certain channels.

Wi-Fi bandwithfor the 2.4 GHz = 2400 MHz band is set torange from 2412 MHz to 2472 MHz.  One channel is assigned in response for each 5 MHz. In addition, bandwith (bandwith) for each channel is set to 22 MHz.

Your modem's settings can have multiple channel settings. Most routers have channel settings set to "Automatic", but if you look at the list there are a dozen Wi-Fi channels. So how do we know which Wi-Fi channels are faster than other channels on this list? Choosing the appropriate Wi-Fi channel can significantly improve your Wi-Fi coverage and performance. But even if you find the fastest channel there, it does not mean that you need to choose it immediately.

Various frequency bands(2.4 GHz, 3.6 GHz, 4.9 GHz, 5 GHz and 5.9 GHz)have their own channel ranges. Usually routers use the 2.4 GHz band with a total of 14 channels, but in reality there may be 13 or fewer channels used worldwide.

The most popular channels for 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi are 1, 6 and 11because they do not overlapwith each other . In a non-MIMO (Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output) installation, that is, you should always try to use channels 1, 6, or 11 with a width of 802.11 a, b, or g.

– What is MIMO: It is a radio term that means multiple inputs and outputs. It helps to improve the performance of the connection by using multiple antennas on the transmitter and/or receiver side.

For 5GHz Band

Increasing the frequency of the broadcast in the environment will reduce your distance while allowing you to make a better quality connection. So if you are having problems such as connectivity, shooting, using high frequency would be the wrong application. Although high frequencies in open areas give successful results, high frequencies in closed areas such as home will have negative consequences.

In theory, this is the case, but since ambient conditions and environmental conditions are one-on-one, it would be wrong to say for sure. The effect of ambient conditions on wifi signal environmental conditions and interference will be discussed in our next articles.

Should I Use 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

If you have a Wi-Fi router that you have purchased in recent years, there is a good chance of supporting both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channel band. Since 2.4 GHz band support comes before the 5 GHz band, you can conclude that the 5 GHz band is always better. However, both groups have pros and cons that you need to know which one to use.

2.4 GHz: This band provides longer coverage, but transmits data at lower speeds.

5 GHz: This band provides less coverage, but transmits data at higher speeds.

In general, higher frequencies penetrate solid objects such as walls and trees more difficult, so the 5 GHz band is not perfect for publishing data in long ranges.

If you can't use both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channel bands at the same time, we recommend that you test the bands independently and choose the one that allows you to achieve higher data transfer rates and lower latency.

Common Channel Interaction

On networks where devices communicate sequenciously, it takes time for each to wait their turn. Therefore, the device wait time is extended. This type of Wi-Fi interference is not actually an electromagnetic interference. Instead, we can explain it as wi-fi routers temporarily suspending the connection of other devices to transmit data.

Contiguous Channel Initiative

Contiguous channel meddling occurs when clients in overlapping channels propact at the same time. Wi-Fi channel selection is very important in such cases. Such channel-related attempts may be interrupted or excluded by selecting the appropriate Wi-Fi channel for your network.

Non-Wi-Fi Interference

In addition to Wi-Fi routers, there are many other electronic devices that can interfere with the 2.4 GHz band. Some of them are; Security cameras intervene because they use it to transmit data wirelessly, such as Bluetooth devices, baby monitors and smartphones, while others intervene because they emit large amounts of electromagnetic radiation, such as microwaves and other devices.

To prevent non-Wi-Fi interference, it is important to put your Wi-Fi router away from all sources of electromagnetic radiation, preferably away from walls, large furniture and similar solid objects.

How Should Wi-Fi Settings Be?

1. Step: To enter the modem or router interface, enter the home page by typing in the address bar of your browser. You can also log in by typing https://modem for the interface screen of some new modems. In the user name and password section, type the login information that you customized.

2. Step : Click Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi).

3. Step : Specify a unique SSID, i.e. Wi-Fi name.

4. Step : Leave the Hide SSID option inactive. If you hide your SSID, you have to connect manually from your device by entering the network name and password.

5. Step : If you are using an 802.11 ac modem, select the option where all protocols are located. If you are not using it and the devices that will establish a wireless connection in your home are the new model; select wireless mode N only mode, and if not b/g/n mode.

6. Step : If your modem is 5 GHz in the channel bandwidth section, select 20/40 MHz here and only 20 MHz if it is 2.4 GHz.
